Melbourne Street Art
Like many cities, Melbourne has a lot of Street Art. It’s everywhere - in lanes and alleyways, on the side of buildings and up above you. You just have to look around. Street Art - like beauty - is in the eye of the beholder: some of it is better than others and some may appeal to your taste more than others. Nevertheless, you have to admire the artistic creativity of those who provide it for our enjoyment.
By its nature, Street Art is ephemeral - here today, gone tomorrow. Some of it endures but most of it doesn’t. Painting over someone else’s work is, I understand, generally fair game, provided you replace it with something better (or at least as good, depending on your point of view). What is not good and is not appreciated - at least by those of us who enjoy and appreciate the artistic endeavours of others - is those who simply deface the work of others by tagging it. Not good ….
Although Hosier Lane is probably the most well-known location for Street Art in Melbourne, here’s a (partial) list of streets, lanes and alleyways where you can expect to find some Street Art in central Melbourne. In addition to these streets and laneways, there are numerous places around the Melbourne suburbs where you’ll find it, often in unexpected places. Keep your eyes open and keep looking around (and up) ….
